A.W.O.L. (A Week of Love) is a beloved Washington Public Schools tradition that began in 2005, founded by the Washington Student Council as a way to give back to families in need within our own community. For over 20 years, this student-led philanthropy has brought hope, compassion, and assistance to many families facing life-altering circumstances.
What started as a simple idea—to show love through action—has grown into one of the most meaningful and unifying programs in our district’s history. Each year, Washington students, staff, and community members join forces to rally behind a chosen family, demonstrating what it truly means to be a Warrior family.
Before the end of each calendar year, Washington Student Council releases an online nomination form inviting community members to nominate individuals or families who are experiencing a significant hardship—such as illness, accident, or other life-changing events—where financial assistance could provide meaningful support.
To be eligible, nominees must have a connection to the community. Once nominations close, all submissions are carefully reviewed, and the nominee receiving the most community support is presented to the Washington Board of Education for final approval.
Throughout the school year, the Student Council organizes numerous fundraising events, school-wide challenges, and donation drives—often joined by other student groups, local churches, and businesses. 100% of the proceeds raised through these efforts are donated directly to the selected A.W.O.L. recipient.
Over the years, A.W.O.L. has grown far beyond a fundraiser—it’s a movement of kindness and unity that reflects the heart of Washington Public Schools. Each act of service, each dollar raised, and each student who participates helps remind us all that when we lift others, we rise together. 💛
